How to download Twitter GIFs
A looping animation on X may look like a traditional GIF, but a download workflow can deliver it as video media. Decide whether you need the animation as it plays or specifically need a .gif file for editing.

Use Share › Copy link to Post. A profile, search or media-tab URL is not a stable identifier for one GIF.

For playback and sharing, MP4 usually preserves the animation with a much smaller file. A true .gif export requires a separate conversion.
Why an X GIF can download as MP4
X presents native videos and GIFs together as autoplaying media. A downloader can therefore receive a video rendition for a post that the interface labels as a GIF.
That is not necessarily a broken file. MP4 supports the moving image efficiently and plays on phones and computers, but it will not have the .gif extension expected by some image editors.
GIF versus video: which should you keep?
Keep MP4 when you want smooth playback, a smaller file and broad device compatibility. Requesting a real GIF only makes sense when a specific app, forum or editing workflow requires that format.
Converting MP4 to GIF increases file size and discards video compression advantages. It is a conversion job, not a direct source download.

Use Share › Copy link to Post from the individual post rather than copying a profile, search or media-tab address. The permanent URL contains /status/ followed by the post identifier.
A copied link remains only a reference to the public post. If the post becomes protected or deleted, the link cannot preserve access to its media.
